Qigong literally means Energy cultivation in Chinese. It is a practice to optimise the health of the body and works using the principle of the meridian system, a subtle network of pathways in the body that when blocked create stagnation which if not balanced can lead to disease.
Through this powerful form of spontaneous movement Qigong, the body is used as a portal for the energy of the lower Dantian (the energy centre) to clear out the meridian system. As this energy starts to flow it will encounter blocks and contractions in the body. In the same way that the body will cough spontaneously to clear a blocked throat the body will start to move and vibrate to facilitate the unblocking of the channels.
As our energetic system gains more coherence and organisation and your contractions and blocks start to melt away, the energy begins to flow and as the energy flows your emotional and mental state start to settle, creating a wonderful sense of balance and calm well-being, unblocking and making way from our conditioned way of being (the influence of parents, society and education which build up the way we think we should be, often in order to keep us safe in challenging situations)
We start each class with a gentle warm up to open the body and free-up any fascial adhesions. We then spend some time in a static standing posture to activate the lower Dantian. This can take one or two sessions to really feel. Once the energy begins to move we segue into some simple moving postures to help facilitate the flow of energy in our bodies, sometimes combined with sound exercises to deepen the process. As the pathogens start to be pushed out of the body we begin to feel lighter and happier and more “ourselves”.
To end:
There is always a short meditation to let everything settle and integrate.
Enough space to swing your arms, comfortable clothes to move in, a laptop/computer.
This form of Qigong, originally called Taiwuxigung, was foundered by the Taiji Grand Master Dr.Shen Hongxun, and brought over to Europe from China in the 1980's. His teachers included Lama Fahai and Master Yow
